#345 くらしの手仕事 － インド －

インドでは、どの地域でも、手でつくることが当たり前の日常としてあります。身に付けるものに始まり、生活で使う道具、その土地、その街のくらしと手仕事が密接に結びついています。

18世紀後半インドでは、英国で起きた産業革命の影響を受け、機械化が進み手仕事に携わる人が激減しました。その後、19世紀に入ると、自分たちのものは自分たちの手でつくること、その大切さを訴えたガンディのインド独立運動により、インド各地で手紡ぎ手織のカディを主とする手仕事が復活し広まっていったともいわれています。 その後、変化を遂げながらもこの活動は思想となり哲学となり、人々のくらしに根付き、今も続いています。

長い歴史の中で途切れることなく受け継がれてきた、布をつくるくらしの手仕事を紹介します。

Handwork in Daily Life － India －

All across India, making things by hand is a natural part of day-to-day life.
From items worn on the body to implements used in daily life, handwork is intimately interwoven into the fabric of life in each locale, each city and town.

In the late 18th century, India saw a sharp decline in the number of people engaged in handwork due to the impact of the Industrial Revolution that began in Great Britain. Later, in the course of the independence movement in India that began in the 19th century, Gandhi extolled the value of making the items they use themselves, by hand. This led to a revival of handwork, particularly handspun, handwoven khadi fabric, which spread throughout India.

Taking on the air of a philosophy, a conviction, the practice of handwork took root in the lives of the people, and this tradition lives on today.

In this edition of Found MUJI, we explore techniques of textile handwork from daily life that have been handed down seamlessly over India's long history.
